Meet Barnaby, a 9-year-old, 175-pound Cane Corso mix who urgently needs a safe place to land.

Barnaby arrived at the shelter without a name, so we gave this big boy one of his own. At his age and size, the shelter environment is especially difficult for him, and we are hoping to find an experienced foster or rescue placement willing to give him the time and patience he needs.

Barnaby has been described as very sweet, but he is fearful of men and can become nervous when handled. Shelter staff have noted that he needs to be handled slowly and carefully, particularly during situations involving his leash or collar. He has not attempted to bite, but his discomfort needs to be respected and managed appropriately while he decompresses.

He is also a slow walker and may simply need time to feel comfortable in his surroundings. His behavior in the shelter does not necessarily tell us who Barnaby will be once he is somewhere quiet and secure.

Medically, Barnaby is heartworm negative and has received Bordetella, DHPP, and rabies vaccinations. He is currently being treated for conjunctivitis and mild corneal edema and is receiving carprofen, cephalexin, gabapentin, trazodone, and ophthalmic medication. He is noted to be obese and has multiple lipomas. His neuter status is currently unknown.

We are still gathering information about his compatibility with dogs and cats, as well as his leash and crate skills.

Barnaby needs an experienced, patient foster home that understands large-breed dogs and is willing to allow him to decompress without placing unnecessary pressure on him. A calm, quiet environment with predictable routines would be ideal.

This senior giant has clearly had a difficult journey, and we want his next chapter to be one where he feels safe, comfortable, and cared for.

Barnaby is urgent and needs placement as soon as possible.
