Sammy needs a fresh start—and someone willing to see the wonderful dog behind a couple of misunderstood moments.

This handsome three-year-old Great Dane is looking for a foster home after being returned through no fault of his own. While Sammy has shown himself to be affectionate, social, and easygoing in many situations, he has also communicated that he doesn't like being disturbed while he's resting. Unfortunately, those boundaries weren't recognized, leading to two incidents in his adoptive home when he was approached while settling in for the night. Earlier in his journey, he was also returned shortly after adoption when he accidentally scratched a young child's face after jumping up in excitement.

Outside of those situations, Sammy has consistently shown what a great companion he can be.

Shelter staff describe Sammy as a friendly, social dog who enjoys meeting new people and walks beautifully on a leash. He previously lived as an indoor family dog, is house trained, and adapts well to new environments. While he may bark at dogs through a fence, he has successfully lived with two other Great Danes in foster care and has done well with canine companions when properly introduced.

Sammy loves spending time outdoors, stretching his long legs in a securely fenced yard several times throughout the day before coming back inside to relax with his people. He's happiest when he has a routine, knows what to expect, and is given the space to settle comfortably when it's time to rest.

Because Sammy has shown that he prefers not to be touched while sleeping, he's looking for a foster home that will respect those boundaries and help him continue building confidence through consistency and positive reinforcement. Like many dogs, he communicates when he's uncomfortable—and listening to those signals helps everyone succeed.

Sammy would do best in an adult home or one with older, dog-savvy family members who understand canine body language and will allow him to rest undisturbed. His compatibility with cats is unknown.

What Sammy needs isn't perfection—he needs understanding. He deserves a foster family willing to advocate for him, respect his boundaries, and help him show just how loving and loyal he can be when he feels safe and understood.
