Meet Hershey

Hershey is a gorgeous 130-pound brindle Great Dane with a big heart and an even bigger desire to be loved. At just one year old, this playful, affectionate boy has found himself needing a new home because his family is going through a divorce.

Hershey is a happy, social dog who loves being around his people. His favorite place is wherever his family is, preferably close enough that he can get plenty of attention, belly rubs, and kisses. He has a particularly sweet relationship with the children in his current home and loves trying to climb into their laps, although his 130-pound body occasionally forgets that he is not a lap dog.

He absolutely loves yard time. Hershey enjoys running, chasing toys, playing fetch, and even chasing his family members around the yard. He currently gets regular play sessions throughout the day and would thrive with a family that can provide plenty of exercise, outdoor time, and companionship.

Hershey is house trained and is accustomed to going outside regularly, although he has also been taught to use an indoor potty area when necessary. He does well with grooming and is comfortable having his paws handled.

Hershey has lived with older children and does very well with them. He is affectionate, playful, and loves attention. His experience with younger children is unknown, so any interactions with small children should be supervised due to his size and enthusiasm.

He is generally friendly with other dogs. Hershey may bark excitedly when he first sees another dog, but once he gets closer, he settles down and wants to sniff and play. Because he is still young and does not always realize just how big he is, he may be overwhelming for an older or smaller dog. He has not shown a reaction to rabbits or parrots. His behavior around cats is unknown.

Hershey is not showing any food or water aggression. He remains calm when people approach or are near his bowls while he is eating or drinking.

On leash, Hershey is manageable but does pull, so he is currently walked by an adult male in the home. Continued leash training and appropriate handling will be important as he matures.

Hershey is an enthusiastic young Dane who would do best with a family that understands the realities of living with a very large, energetic adolescent dog. He needs a secure yard or regular opportunities to exercise and play, along with continued training, structure, and plenty of positive interaction with his people.

Most importantly, Hershey needs a family who will love him for the big, goofy, affectionate boy he is.
