Meet Rugger

Rugger has come a long way from the life he once knew.

This handsome 2-year-old Great Dane spent most of his life living outdoors before he and his brother, Dante, were surrendered to a rural shelter without enough space to house them. With nowhere else available, the boys ended up living in outdoor kennels behind a landfill.

That's how they earned the nickname "The Landfill Hooligans."

Thankfully, that chapter is over. Rugger is safe, living in a home, and finally getting the opportunity to learn what being someone's dog is all about.

And we're discovering that underneath his uncertain beginning is one seriously sweet, easygoing guy.

Rugger is the more independent of the two brothers. He enjoys affection and spending time with his people, but he doesn't need to be attached to someone's hip every second of the day. He has a wonderfully laid-back personality and is happy simply being part of what's going on around him.

He also does great with other dogs, both large and small, making him a potentially wonderful addition to a multi-dog household.

Rugger walks well on leash and is continuing to work on his potty training. Because he spent so much of his early life outdoors, living inside a home is still relatively new to him. He's learning quickly, but his future family should expect to continue reinforcing his routine and helping him understand everything that comes with being an indoor dog.

And Rugger comes with one particularly adorable bonus feature: an extra toe on one of his rear feet. We like to think it's simply a little more Rugger to love.
