Meet Big Boy

Big Boy may have started his story as a stray, but this remarkable boy has proven himself to be something very special. Calm, affectionate, highly trainable, and incredibly well-mannered, Big Boy is truly a unicorn of a dog and is ready to find his forever home.

After being found as a stray, a kindhearted person took Big Boy in and made sure he received everything he needed to prepare for his next chapter. His vaccinations were brought up to date, his medical needs were addressed, and he was given the opportunity to show just what an incredible dog he is.

Big Boy also completed a behavioral assessment, where he did exceptionally well. He remained calm and friendly in unfamiliar situations and demonstrated the steady temperament his finder has come to know and love.

Temperament and Personality

Big Boy is an exceptionally calm and responsive dog. He listens well even when there are distractions around him and has shown an impressive ability to remain composed in situations that might overwhelm many dogs.

On one occasion, when another dog was reacting and lunging toward him, Big Boy responded to his handler's cue by sitting and staying while the other dog was moved away. He has consistently demonstrated that even when excited or stimulated, he remains responsive to his person.

Big Boy currently lives with other dogs and has never shown aggression toward dogs inside or outside the home. He doesn't feel the need to rush up to other animals or get into their space and generally interacts in a respectful, easygoing manner.

He has also been around chickens without issue. His compatibility with cats is currently unknown, as is his experience living with children.

People are another story—Big Boy loves them. A visit to Tractor Supply resulted in plenty of new friends, praise, and treats from the staff. He enjoys being close to his person and is very much a "velcro dog" by choice, happily following his human around the house. At the same time, he can handle being left alone and will simply settle down and sleep.

He is quiet in the home and does not typically bark indoors. Storms can make him anxious, but otherwise he is described as an incredibly settled companion.

Training and Home Life

Big Boy is house trained and leash trained. He naturally stays close to his handler and has demonstrated excellent responsiveness and focus.

He enjoys spending time outside and gets approximately one to two hours of outdoor time each day, where he has the opportunity to run and play. He is also comfortable settling down and relaxing with his people.

He is comfortable having food and other high-value items handled and will patiently wait for them to be returned.

One very important thing his future family should know: salmon-flavored food apparently receives a firm rejection from Big Boy. Even unicorns have standards.

Medical Information

Big Boy is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and current on heartworm and flea/tick prevention.

On August 27, 2026, he underwent a procedure to address a cyst and associated tract beneath his jaw. He has recovered very well, and no ongoing monitoring or additional surgery is currently expected. His medical documentation will be available.

He also has a slight limp involving his left front paw. This has been evaluated by a veterinarian, who did not identify any current concerns. His finder has generously offered to sponsor an X-ray or treatment for the paw/leg should his future veterinarian determine that additional evaluation is necessary.

Big Boy's Ideal Home

Big Boy is looking for a family who will appreciate his calm temperament, intelligence, loyalty, and desire to be close to his people. He has already demonstrated that he can live successfully with other dogs and has the kind of steady, responsive personality that makes him an especially rewarding companion.

After life as a stray, Big Boy has been given the medical care, stability, and love he needed to become adoption ready. Now there is just one thing left on his list: a family of his own.
